There is also that rustic approach to Russian foods, mostly contributed by their many different types of smoked meats and fishes. Russian food is definitely one of the best kept secrets in the culinary world, even now that a lot of people have already discovered its wonderful flavors and aromas. There are still some aspects to Russian foods and Russian cooking that is yet to be part of the mainstream in culinary terms.

Russian foods consist of a lot of soups. Soups have always been very important to all Russian meals due to the weather conditions in that part of the world. The cold Russian days and nights have always been manageable to the Russians thanks to a variety of warm and hearty soups that have been at the core of Russian cuisine from long ago. There are many different types of Russian soups, including cold soups like kyass and okroshka, light vegetable stews, noodle soups with meat, mushrooms and milk, and cabbage soups like shchi.

The entrees in traditional Russian food have a lot of meat in them. The three most basic types of meat dishes in Russian food are the large boiled chunks of meat in soup or porridge, second course meats, and cold meats served as snacks.
